KIDS BRACES FAQ'S
What Age Do You Start Seeing Kids?
As a rule of thumb, we like to evaluate young patients after the 6-year molars erupt and the front permanent teeth just start to appear. This is usually between the ages of 6 and 8. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that all children be seen for the first time by age 7.
How Long Will The First visit Take?
The first visit can last anywhere between 30 minutes and 1 hour depending on how ready the patient is for treatment. We may just do a visual exam and explain the situation or we may suggest one or more X-rays and complete diagnostics including impressions of the teeth with photographs to document the current position.
Will My child Need a retainer?
Yes, retainers are worn night-time for at least the first 12 months after treatment.
Will braces hurt?
Generally, braces do not “hurt.” After certain appointments, your teeth may be sore for a few days. In these situations, over-the-counter pain medications, such as Advil or Tylenol, will ease the discomfort. However, after most visits, patients do not feel any soreness at all. We often remind our patients it does not have to hurt to work!
Can sports still be played/play musical instruments?
Yes! We recommend that patients wear mouthguards while playing sports. Musicians will likely experience an adjustment period of a few days until they are comfortable playing wind instruments while wearing braces.
How Often Are Appointments?
Appointments are scheduled according to each patient’s needs. Most patients in braces will be seen every 6 to 8 weeks. If there are specific situations that require more frequent monitoring, we will schedule appointments accordingly.

How Long Will I Be in Braces?
Many adults avoid getting braces because they think they’ll have to wear them for an eternity. That’s a myth. The period you’ll need to wear braces will primarily depend on the brace type you choose, the severity of your condition, and other factors.
You can only determine how long the treatment will take by booking an appointment with an orthodontist near you to evaluate the severity of your condition. However, on average, most adults wear braces for between one to three years.
Can I get Braces with Missing Teeth?
If you have missing teeth, don’t worry. You can still get braces. In fact, braces can be an excellent treatment option if you have missing teeth because they can close the gaps created by missing teeth.

What are my treatment options?
While childhood is the best time to seek orthodontic treatment, seeking it in adulthood offers you more treatment options. You can decide to get standard metal braces. Alternatively, if you’re self-conscious about how metal braces look, you can opt to get ClearCorrect instead. These are clear aligners that are less conspicuous, and they are just as effective at straightening teeth. What’s more, with ClearCorrect aligners, you’ll need to visit our office less often for check-ups and adjustment.
Will insurance cover treatment?
Many dental insurance plans cover part or even the entire cost of getting braces. However, we’ll help you clarify what your insurance plan covers to avoid any surprises down the road. While some insurers provide comprehensive coverage for a wide range of orthodontic treatments, others don’t.
Will I need a retainer?
Yes, after your adult metal braces are removed, you will likely need to wear a retainer to maintain your results. Retainers help keep your teeth in their new positions and prevent them from shifting back. Dr. Mansell will provide specific instructions on how often and how long you should wear your retainer to ensure your smile remains straight and beautiful.
Am I too old for braces?
No, you’re never too old for braces! While braces are commonly associated with teenagers, adults make up a significant portion of orthodontic patients. Advances in orthodontic technology have made it easier and more comfortable for adults to achieve the smile they’ve always wanted. Whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s, or beyond, adult orthodontic braces can be an effective solution for aligning your teeth.
